Engagement Model & Pricing

Everything we do is on a per-project basis, which generally means:

  • An SOW capturing what we’re going to do, when we’ll deliver things, in what format, etc.
  • Invoicing for the whole amount at once (more info in a moment), so none of that 50% up-front messiness

Note that:

  • A single project can include multiple elements/assets (our record is something like ~30 individual components)
  • We can roll multiple projects into a single invoice (citing multiple SOWs if necessary), but we’d prefer to keep things separate

Also, some clients prefer or need to manage everything as singular projects — that is, a single budget, SOW, and invoice.

However, to avoid internal budgeting and procurement overhead, some clients prefer to set aside a larger Cromulent budget pool (maybe covered by a single, broad SOW), which we gradually draw upon. Maybe it all counts as a single project, maybe it’s multiple projects, but going this route means you only have to acquire an overall budget, once, rather than lots of smaller budgets.

We’re a one-person company, so we have tremendous ability to accommodate how your company works.

Invoicing

For the most part, we invoice per project — usually on completion, delivery, or the home stretch. Basically, once things are pretty much done from our end, we’ll go “Hi, is it OK if we invoice now?”

Note that we’ll still be available for refinements, reviews, questions, etc. even after we’ve invoiced.

In the comparatively rarer situations in which we’re drawing down from a larger Cromulent budget, we’ve done monthly invoices to help keep things simple on the client’s end.

Oh, and we’re happy to invoice however your company requires us to do so, which typically means one of:

  • Emailing or Slacking a PDF to the project lead
  • Uploading a PDF through Coupa, Ramp, or whatever tool your AP team uses to manage things

Pricing

It’s hard to get into pricing specifics, because every project offers a unique combination of research and writing requirements (not the least of which is length).

Plus, we can also provide end-to-end design, with:

  • Custom graphics (e.g., visuals, technical diagrams, graphs/charts, etc.)
  • Layout/styling in accordance with your brand guidelines (if applicable)
  • Delivery of web and print PDFs, as needed, plus the artwork files (e.g., InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)

What we’re saying is that there are variables at play.

To date, our largest single project — a long, technical, flagship piece of thought leadership — was $60,000 USD.

We also regularly do pieces of thought leadership in the $20-25k USD range, and lots of reports and whitepapers in the $15-20k USD range.

Then, in descending order of (average) price, we’ve got:

  • Brochures, longer case studies, eBooks, use case libraries
  • Solution guides, how-to guides, shorter case studies
  • Datasheets, infosheets, articles, and even the occasional infographic
  • Blogs

Maybe the most important thing to note (why are we hiding this at the bottom?) is that we will find a way to work within your budget.

We do things this way because...

  • It minimizes overhead on our end, allowing us to focus on doing actual work
  • It keeps things simple on your end (because you probably already have enough stuff to manage)
  • It avoids any and all concerns and/or misaligned incentives associated with hourly billing (e.g., we have no incentive to take longer than is necessary and you don’t have to worry about us charging for more hours than a project actually consumed)
